Abdominal wall hernias are increasingly becoming a surgical area of focus. We have seen many advancements in recent years, from new anatomical knowledge, new surgical techniques, and an ever-increasing possibility of using minimally invasive approaches (video laparoscopy and robotics). The postgraduate course in abdominal wall hernias will provide the complete training necessary for clinical and surgical practice in correcting abdominal wall defects. There will be 4 modules covering everything from the anatomical concepts of the abdominal wall, main surgical techniques, inguinal, ventral, incisional, lumbar hernias, and hiatal hernia. Through modules with extensive theoretical content delivery, interspersed with practical activities on live models, cadaver labs, use of various simulation platforms, and immersion activities with hands-on practice in surgical cases accompanied by expert abdominal wall surgeons and leading references in the field.

Methodology

The training is theoretical and practical for understanding the operation and components of the technological platform to be used in surgery. 
 
All in-person training will involve the use of: 
  •  Simulation center and in the surgical room, focusing on normal operation and problem-solving. 
  • Complementary pre-clinical training that will involve the development of motor skills based on simulation of the surgical techniques focused on the training. 
  • The surgical techniques will also include the observation of surgical case studies, creating for the student, the experience of assisting in procedures, as well as performing procedures in training and under supervision. 
  • All these steps will be supervised by a preceptor surgeon, with extensive practical experience and established knowledge in the technical area being trained. 
The classes will occur as follows: 
  •  Theoretical EAD classes taught by reference professionals in the field, presentation of live surgeries with discussion of clinical cases. 
  • Practical training on live and inanimate models. 
  • Observational internship, which provides experience with the real routine of the service in Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Dynamics

Duration of up to 16 months

Total workload of 360 hours, divided into 280 hours of theoretical and practical activities and 80 hours of supervised internship.

9 hours of live theoretical classes 9 hours of analysis/evaluation of advanced surgeries 9 hours of reading articles and studying cases
